FCT area council election: INEC to ensure peaceful election


The Independent National Electoral Commission , INEC says its will work with all stakeholders to ensure the forthcoming FCT Area Council election is peaceful.

The chairman INEC , Prof. Mahmood Yakubu stated this at a meeting with the inter -agency consultative committee on election security (ICCES) to review security arrangements for the Area Council election in the FCT, in Abuja.

Mahmood said the commission has been evaluating the risk to the election using the election violence mitigation and advocacy tool to identify early warning signals that could assist the security agencies and other stakeholders in devising and deploying appropriate mitigation strategies.

He also disclosed that the commission is preparing for six bye- elections on 26th February 2022, followed by the Ekiti and Osun Governorship elections on 18th June and 16th July 2022 respectively .

The INEC boss however warned political parties to strictly adhere to the commission’s timelines for all activities, including the conduct of primaries and nomination of candidates, warning that timelines are firm and fixed ,and no deviation or violation will be allowed.

Also speaking, the National Security Adviser and co-chairman of ICCES , Babagana Monguno who was represented by Mr. S.B Tobin, urged all security agencies to put in their best to ensure the FCT Area Council election is hitch free.
