The Senate has passed the Terrorism, Prevention, Act, 2013 bill prohibiting the payment of ransom to kidnappers in Nigeria.

The passage followed the adoption of the report of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters at plenary.

Chairman of the Committee, Opeyemi Bamidele, said the bill sought to outlaw the payment of ransom to abductors, kidnappers and terrorists for release of persons who had either been wrongfully confined, imprisoned or kidnapped.

Commenting, President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, said the bill would complement the Federal Government’s efforts in the fight against insecurity when signed into law by the President.
