The U.S. Senate has passed a bill that will protect federal recognition of same-sex marriage.

The narrowly tailored bill, will require the federal government to recognize a marriage if it was legal in the state in which it was performed.

It will not bar states from blocking same-sex or interracial marriages if the Supreme Court allowed them to do so.

The bill was passed by sixty-one to thirty-six votes.

Twelve Republicans joined forty-nine Democrats in supporting the bill.
