The French President, Emmanuel Macron says the country’s ambassador to Niger will stay in the Sahel country despite pressure to leave from leaders of a recent coup.

Macron also noted that France would support any military action by The Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS in Niger.

Speaking during a major foreign policy speech to ambassadors gathering in Paris, the French President said the country’s envoy, Sylvain Itte was listening in from Niger’s capital, Niamey, despite being given a 48-hour deadline to leave the country last Friday.

He said the putschists were putting the Nigerien in danger, as they were abandoning the fight against terrorism, losing all the international funding that was in the process of lifting them out of poverty.
